The Giver- Are They Clones?
The impression I have gotten from "The Giver" so far is that the people of the community are controled by the elders. They can't make their own decisions, they must follow the rules or they will be released. I think that this type of control makes the people seem like clones. They do the same things as everyone else. Their lives are chosen from them and they are constantly monitored. They have no sense of freedom and the elders are "protecting" them from the outside world. I feel that the people don't know what it's like to actually live but they are to afraid to challenge the rules. I think the community relates to our society when it comes to people falling victims of media influence. It's like in the video "Beauty Pressure", it shows imagines of what females tend to do to make themselves feel accepted by society. Most of us do but why? It's to follow everyone and most people don't do anything about it because they are afraid to challenge it. I feel as if the people in "The Giver" and people in our society today should take a stand and be themselves. If they do this, then they will be very happy and satisfied with their lives.

I agree with you, but I see them more as sheep being blindly led. They don't miss freedom, because they've never experienced it and the elders have made their community lose their freedom of choice by going to Sameness. I see them as clones in a way because they were genetically created by scientists, but they do have differences but they are not embraced and their freedom of choice is supressed by their lack of knowledge and history.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Gabby and good to see a comment from someone besides me, Evan!
ReplyDeleteI think you are right to make connections back to our society here, when it comes to "sameness" and doing things because everyone else does. How much of what we do is simply because of that reason? Nice job relating it to the "beauty pressure" video. ~LM
I see your point and that does makes sense to me. I think it's great to see other people's points because sometimes they help clearify things for me.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with all of the above stated and I think it's cool that you related this to an outside source. What really interests me is how this DOES reflect many aspects of our current society. Many people are afraid to try something different when it isn't already popular and this only reinforces the "clone" affect. I think people should dare to be different because really, to be different, is only to be ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with you. We see the "clone" affect all the time. We see it in magazines, TV advertisements, and in other forms of media. When people see that type of stuff in advertisements they tend to feel as if they have to be that way and only that way to fit into society, which is NOT the case. Everyone shouldn't have to look to those type of advertisements to feel a sense of fitting in, they should just be happy with you they are and express themselves freely. If people keep acting like "clones", they will lose themselves and are society wouldn't be nice to live in.
